Guiding the Next Generation of Homeopaths: Reflections from Student to Supervisor

When I was asked to write about my experience as a supervisor it came as no surprise because in the week prior I had been thinking a lot about my time as a tutor and mentor, primarily for RMDY Academy students. I had been reflecting on how personally and professionally enriching the journey has been, and how satisfying it is to see so many new students on their journey to becoming practising homeopaths. So the request seemed like the most beautiful alignment of timing.

But how have I got to this point? It’s been an interesting journey so let’s rewind quickly to circa 2015; my final year studying at Endeavour and the last cohort of homeopathic students in Australia until relatively recently. The second NHMRC report came out that year and the climate around homeopathy was a little disheartening to say the least. It wasn’t just the impact to our profession that transpired from the report, it was also the significant events that happened in the years that followed; private health insurance being pulled in Australia, Covid, the mandates, the trauma, the illness etc. And can I just take a moment to acknowledge each of you for holding space for your clients through this time because it has come with many challenges, and as far as I can tell, you have met this with the heartfelt and enduring dedication to healing that people need.

Back to 2015, in my class was another student; Melissa Kupsch who is the founder of RMDY Academy. As Mel created such a remarkable groundswell of interest in homeopathy here and overseas, she built a fantastic team around her to support her growing community. And what an amazing community it is. The post-Covid healthcare climate has changed, more and more people are turning to alternative health modalities, and the sentiment around homeopathy has shifted significantly. From this groundswell it seemed like a natural progression for Mel to create RMDY Academy due to her growing community with so many people showing an interest in learning about this wonderful healing modality. And as the Advanced Practitioner course evolved, Mel asked me to come on board as a tutor, and I have loved every minute of that journey.

Currently my week is split up into tutoring for RMDY, mentoring in addition to that, and general consultations. With the first cohort in their final few months of their course, the tutoring load is currently quite heavy but I’ve found that it creates a nice balance to full time one on one consults. My role is to listen to the students’ case presentations and give feedback and advice as required. We brainstorm together, discuss options, explore miasmatic implications, clarify differentials and analyse the cases from various angles. The tutorials are set up into small groups of students and they each gain additional knowledge from listening to the cases being presented by their peers. There have been moments of joy, big realisations, self-reflection, excitement at watching a case improve or resolve, and occasionally some moments of stress, anxiety and overwhelm. Not without cause though, because juggling such a comprehensive and intensive learning program into modern life is challenging, but I am so proud of the students as they’ve made their way through the program.

What is it that is so rewarding about the experience of being a supervisor? There are so many factors but something that I have come to love is witnessing the students’ passion about this wonderful healing modality. Sure we all feel passionate about what we do, but do you remember when you were studying? What it was like to realise what homeopathy could do, how it stimulates healing, the history, the theory, the remedies, the discovery? And then you were connecting with other students who felt the same way - all of the conversations and discussions, miasmatic theory, the remedy explorations. Being able to share that with the students is such a privilege at this point in my career. It is a deeply fulfilling experience to be around so much curiosity, wonder and awe. And to share that energy about the very thing that you love so much yourself - what a hugely gratifying professional experience.

Whilst there have been countless homeopathic wins along the way, witnessing some of the students have success with fertility cases has been such a delight. Couples who have struggled for years to become pregnant and who, after a short course of treatment, are finally fulfilling their dreams to be parents, nothing beats witnessing the joy the students have at those results.

And then there’s the learning, we all know that we never stop learning about our profession; the remedies, the different methods of prescribing, navigating ever-changing ailments, but as I have supervised, I have also learned new things. Whether that has been different posology methods or highlighting a remedy that I didn’t know too much about, or hearing about an ailment I’ve never heard of before. Sure, I am part of the students’ journey offering experience and guidance, but I am happy to admit that I have truly benefited in learning from them as well.

The RMDY Academy 2026 cohort will be a class of over 500 graduates, which truly is quite a feat. When I graduated in 2015, it was with a small handful of the last students of homeopathy in Australia for what would be the better part of a decade, that is a phenomenal turnaround. Now there are several fantastic homeopathic courses available in Australia, and our guidance is so important to help these students make it into the world as professional homeopaths. Whilst it has certainly been an interesting journey navigating through the last ten years in practice, I know I couldn’t have done it without drawing on guidance from my mentors over the years. Whether your experience helps them with remedy selection, posology, theory or even down to clinic management and business tips, your knowledge is so necessary to help shape the future of our profession. Homeopathy is making a comeback and we as a community need to support that revival in whatever way we can. Having support and supervision from seasoned homeopaths who have been through it already is such a crucial part of developing the skills new graduates need to best serve their clients.

So I invite you to consider supervising this new cohort of excellent students, or the next ones, or the next ones. Because they need you, they need your knowledge, your wisdom, your practical experience – all of those little gems of treatment options and skills you have that serve your clients so well. Simply put, if these students are the best practitioners they can be with your guidance and knowledge, then they can better serve their communities with healthcare. And we all know that is what the world needs now.
